OUR STORY
Picture
The Nick Wilson Charitable Group (NWCG) was founded in 2005 by Nick Wilson’s family with the hope of helping other families traveling the unknown and tumultuous path through childhood cancer treatment and bone marrow transplantation.

Having faced their worst nightmare in 2001 when Nick passed away at the tender age of three, the Metz/Wilson Family focused their energies on what would help families - that wasn’t already being addressed in the community. Like many families, they found that, despite having adequate health insurance, making ends meet with the multitude of other expenses that arose while Nick was undergoing treatment was a terribly difficult.

With this financial struggle in mind, NWCG became an independent non-profit organization dedicated to providing compassionate financial support to children, teens, and their families undergoing cancer treatment and blood and marrow transplantation at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

NWCG seeks to improve the quality of life of families by providing significant financial support for the many costs they encounter during their child’s medical treatment - reducing financial stress and allowing families to focus their energies where it is needed most, on the medical and social needs of their family members.

This family-centered support is provided in an efficient, timely and easily-accessible manner that is sensitive to the family’s needs and wishes and is accomplished through a hospital-based referral system managed by professional medical social workers who approach NWCG with requests from eligible families.

We value family, honesty, integrity, respect, compassion, and efficiency in supporting families in need.

MEET NICK
At just 18 months old, Nick Wilson was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Nick endured two years of treatments - chemotherapy, radiation, blood and marrow transplants, and many other procedures - while always seizing an opportunity to play, laugh and smile. Despite the tremendous effort by Nick and his doctors, he succumbed to the disease in April 2001.

It is in loving memory of Nick’s incredible spirit and zest for life that his family and friends endeavor to keep his spirit and compassion alive by helping other children and families finding themselves in similar circumstances.
