The programs and services offered by the Nick Wilson Charitable Group have been developed based on the experiences of the Metz/Wilson Family, and also from input provided by families who have received their services.
In addition, the medical staff and social workers from whom NWCG receives its referrals provide invaluable input and feedback regarding what families need. As a result, NWCG is able to provide the type of help that families need most.
FAMILY GRANTS This program helps families to cover the many expenses they encounter while their child is undergoing cancer treatment and blood & marrow transplantation. Support for mortgage, rent, hotel costs, car payments, utility bills and insurance premiums are just some of the ways we help families financially.
Sometimes families find themselves with so few resources that they need financial help that very day to buy a tank or gas or bag of groceries to feed the family. Gift cards for gas and groceries are available to any family who needs them through one of the social workers on staff in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit at Doernbecher. And if they need it, they will get that help today.
A family can expect their child to be hospitalized approximately thirty days when undergoing blood or marrow transplantation. And sometimes it can be longer. To help comfort the child and family during this lengthy stay, NWCG provides a Care Kit to each family upon admission. A tote bag containing comforting and useful items to help provide comfort and help to pass the time is given to the family. Such items might include a snuggly blanket, toys, gift cards, toiletries, games, snacks, music, books and art supplies.
When a child is discharged after transplant, NWCG provides them with a small kit with items that help keep exposure to infections and sun to a minimum. The kit includes a digital thermometer, sunscreen, antibacterial gel and wipes and lip balm.
Costs for many necessary laboratory procedures are not always covered by health insurance. These might include, but are not limited to, assistance with bone marrow typing and procedures that help to preserve fertility in young patients. NWCG will help families pay for these procedures when insurance won’t.
NWCG helps to finance funeral or cremation costs, counseling, and other things that might provide help and comfort to a family after a child dies.
